It’s been rainy and chilly in Paris this weekend, but there is some recompense. When the weather is like this, smells linger longer in the air and with more intensity. On a stroll down Rue Bayen, which is part of the Rue Poncelet market in the 17th Arrondissement, there was no escaping the scent of roasting chicken and ripe melons. But, then, who would want to escape?

I asked the fruit seller why so many bees on the melons. “The sugar!” he said. “They know what’s sweet.” In the United States, he might have tried to wave the bees away. In Paris, they’re doing his advertising.

The politics of Le Sacré Coeur, built on the site of the Commune's last redoubts to reassert a conservative social order, are not entirely sympathique. But those white domes are hard to resist. I walked up there for lunch with a friend today, hoping to avoid the military parade on the Champs Elysées, but the parade kept coming to me.

This marvelous statue of a giraffe and its baby is right on La Canebière, the main street of Marseille. It commemorates the arrival in the city in 1826 of a giraffe given as a gift to King Charles X by Egypt's Mohammed Ali. In 1998, my great friend told the story in his marvelous book Zarafa: A Giraffe's True Story, from Deep in Africa to the Heart of Paris, and ever since -- often without credit -- those who retell the tale call the beauteous beast Zarafa. The reason this is "III" is that football holligans trashed at least one of the earlier versions. This one -- with a place for book donations to the library, or to passers-by (like the guy on the bike) who stop and browse -- is now a permanent fixture.

Liberty's Flame at the Pont de l'Alma in Paris was never meant to be a memorial to the late Princess Diana, but it stands above the tunnel where she died, and those who remember her, or obsess about her, often leave flowers, pictures and notes there. The décor of Le Rouquet on the corner of Blvd St. Germain and Rue des Saint Pères dates back to 1954, when the owner, now 74, was in her teens. Le Rouquet is just up the street from Les Deux Magots and the Flore, but it's a whole different feel. Indeed, La Patronne is a little embarrassed if you say that hers is "one of the three." But she remembers when Sartre and other great figures of the literary world would stop by in the 1950s, and she notes that Hachette, Gallimard and Seuil are still in the neighborhood, so she still gets editors and writers connected to those great publishing houses. Until the 1980s, Le Rouquet would stay open until one or two in the morning and you can imagine the Godardian atmosphere, but these days it closes around 9:30 at night. The terrasse is big, but can get pretty noisy if there's traffic, and usually there is. The food is not great (but it's not so hot in the others, either). One plus is that everything is a little less expensive at Le Rouquet, especially if you stand at the counter, which I don't recall ever doing -- or being able to do -- down the street. But the main reason I go to Le Rouquet is for the lights and the atmosphere inside, which remind me of my first trip to Paris, which was when I was three, in 1954. - CD
